God created war so that Americans would learn geography.
Tikrosios savo šeimos Evan neprisimena. Jis net nežino, kokiu vardu buvo pavadintas savo tėvų ar kokia tikroji jo pavardė. Rodos, kad jis asmeninio gyvenimo apskritai neturėjo, vaikystė neegzistavo, o pats išdygo kone iš šventosios dvasios viename iš laboratorijos mėgintuvėlių. Tačiau tiesa yra kitokia: suėjus dvidešimt penkeriems metams, pirmojo pasaulinio karo metu,  ir dalyvaujant medicininiuose tyrimuose išradinėjant naujus vaistus, vaikinas pats to nesuvokdamas pasirašė keistus savanoriškus dokumentus bei perdavė savo likimą iškrypusiems Amerikos valdininkams į rankas. Evanui buvo padaryta lobotomija, kuri tais laikais visiškai buvo legalus dalykas, ir vaikinas prarado visą savo iki tol sukauptą atmintį bei patirtį. Vaikino artimieji buvo informuoti dėl Evano mirties, kurią ale sukėlė bandomi vaistai ir jo egzistavimas tapo valstybine paslaptimi.
Vaikinas be prisiminimų ir patirties buvo puiki medžiaga amerikiečių mokslininkams atlikti genetinius bandymus bandant atrasti naują politinį ginklą prieš didžiąsias pasaulio šalis. Jų vizija buvo pavidalą keičiantis žmogus, kuris bus pavaldus bei paklusnus senatui ir sugebės atlikti tam tikrus politinius veiksmus, kuriems gali daryti konkretūs pavieniai asmenys. Rodos, viskas buvo vien tik dėl Amerikos, tačiau ar apie tokią Ameriką svajojo pats Evanas? Net jei ir mokslininkams pavyko sukurti pavidalą keičiančią pabaisą, deja jie bijodami pažeisti vaikino smegenis ir paversti jį daržove, negalėjo pakeisti moralės ir principų įsišaknijusių giliai naujai užgimusiame monstre. Evanas pasišlykštėjęs tuo kuo buvo paverstas ir labiausiai to priežastimi, keisdamas pavidalus nesunkiai paspruko iš laboratorijos apėjęs tuo laikų vieną iš stipriausių apsaugos sistemų. Net jei ir jis neturėjo jokio turto su savimi, pažinčių ar artimųjų, vaikinas nesijautė tuščiomis rankomis ar vienišas. Jis turėjo viltį, kad laikui bėgant jis pasistengs padaryti Ameriką gera vieta visiems, nepriklausomai nuo to ar esi paprastas civilis, ar išsigimėlis, ar svetimšalis. Evano ambicijos nebuvo tuščios - genetinių pakitimų dėka jis galėjo būti kuo tik nori.
